This beautiful bunch of flowers captured my imagination so much, I painted it three times. But flowers move and change, even when cut. Petals and leaves drop, some stems stand more upright, buds reach out and open up. The composition and directional forces totally changed from the initial bunch. The arrangement had taken on a more elegant, formal appearance but those wonderful linear patterns were still there in the petals and leaves.

I came across this amazing plant, a Haemanthus lily, at a friend’s place. I was fascinated by the swirling, circling movements of the plant, the very thick stems like dowelling and the white flowers which looked like tulips but were packed with stamens. I was given some and they looked perfect in the setting of my studio with masks and a sculpture. I repeated the linear, circular and twisting themes throughout, creating maximum rhythm and unity. As I was painting, my grumpy cat, always inquisitive, put himself in the picture.

This painting was done while I was holidaying in a B&B set in dense and varied bushland. The grass trees sparkled in the morning sun and my challenge was to capture the essential light, moisture and forms without fussing over too many details.

When a friend gives you flowers, what do you do? Those brilliant colours and strong textures were an invitation to immediately start painting. Besides the colours, flooded in light, I was also fascinated by the linear qualities. There was great unity in the width of the stems and petals and I deliberately selected flat brushes that would emphasize this. I also loved the exuberant ‘dance’ of the leaves and think I managed to create something that is joyous, full of life and movement.

The Supermarine Spitfire Mark V, with the tail number P7973, is a celebrated icon of aviation history. This particular aircraft played a crucial role during the Second World War, serving as part of No. 57 or No. 61 Operational Training Units. It was within these units that pilots honed their skills, preparing for the intense aerial combat they would face in the skies over Europe.
One of the notable pilots associated with P7973 was K. W. ‘Bluey’ Truscott, a distinguished member of No. 452 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Truscott's exemplary flying skills and bravery in the face of adversity made him a revered figure in military aviation. His connection to P7973 adds a layer of historical significance to this already storied aircraft.
The Supermarine Spitfire was one of the most important aircraft of WWII. Renowned for its graceful lines and superlative maneuverability, the Spitfire gained legendary status during the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940. It was the only British fighter produced continuously throughout the war, with over 20,000 units built. The Spitfire's Rolls-Royce Merlin engine provided exceptional performance at high altitudes, making it a formidable opponent for German aircraft.
P7973's operational life came to a close in 1944, having served valiantly in the defense of freedom. In recognition of its contributions and as a tribute to the brave pilots who flew it, this aircraft was retired from service and, in 1945, was presented to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Today, it stands as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought during the Second World War, and it continues to inspire future generations with its legacy.

Pompeii Equestrian Statue - Horses Head
Unearthed near the majestic Arch of Caligula in Pompeii, an extraordinary equestrian statue now resides in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. This statue, a testament to the artistry and grandeur of the Roman Empire, showcases the skill and dedication of ancient sculptors who sought to immortalize their subjects in bronze.
The statue depicts a powerful horse and its rider, capturing a moment of grace and strength. The intricate details of the horse's musculature and the rider's attire reflect the high level of craftsmanship and artistry that defined Roman sculpture. The horse, with its poised stance and noble bearing, embodies the essence of strength and elegance, while the rider's commanding presence speaks to the authority and stature of the figure it represents.
As an artist, I found the task of drawing the horse head of this equestrian statue both challenging and rewarding. The complexity of the horse's anatomy required careful attention to detail and a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship of the original sculptors. However, the process of capturing this majestic piece on paper was immensely fulfilling, especially the details of the damage through spending many years buried beneath the ground - the dents, holes and even worm trails on the neck and muzzle.
The statue stands as a reminder of Pompeii's rich cultural heritage and the enduring legacy of Roman art. It serves not only as a historical artifact but also as an inspiration for contemporary artists who continue to draw upon the past to inform and enrich their work. Through my drawing, I hope to honor the timeless beauty and spirit of this equestrian statue, capturing a piece of history that continues to resonate with us today.

The Llandeilo Cross, an extraordinary relic from the 8th century, was unearthed during the rebuilding of St. Teilo’s Church in Wales between 1848 and 1850. This remarkable artifact stands out as the only known Celtic cross with a rectangular surround, deviating from the traditional circular design typically associated with such crosses.
As an archaeologist and artist, I find the Llandeilo Cross particularly compelling. Its discovery challenges our understanding of Celtic art and symbolism, prompting us to question the narratives we've inherited about early medieval craftsmanship and religious expression. This unique design invites us to reconsider the cultural and artistic influences of the time, suggesting that there may have been regional variations or innovations that have yet to be fully understood.

Cleopatra III Cartouche
Cleopatra III was a significant figure in the Ptolemaic Dynasty, known for her political acumen and influence during her reign. She co-ruled Egypt with Ptolemy IX from 116-
107 BC and later governed independently from 88-81 BC. Her reign was marked by complex family dynamics and political intrigue, as she navigated alliances and rivalries within the Ptolemaic court.
The cartouche of Cleopatra III, originating from the Temple of Kom Ombo in Egypt, serves as a testament to her legacy. The Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the gods Sobek and Horus, is renowned for its intricate carvings and inscriptions that provide insights into the rulers and religious practices of the time. Cleopatra III's cartouche is among these historical treasures, symbolizing her authority and connection to the divine.
Cleopatra III was the daughter of Ptolemy VI and Cleopatra II, and her lineage placed her at the center of the Ptolemaic Dynasty's power struggles. Her children included notable figures such as Ptolemy IX Lathyros and Ptolemy X Alexander I, who continued the dynasty's legacy. The Stargazer, giving both front and side views, is a captivating artifact from around 3,000 BC, was unearthed in Kirşehir, Turkey. This ancient figurine, with its prominent tiny eyes gazing skyward, embodies the enigmatic artistry of early Bronze Age Anatolia. Known as a "Kilia-type" figure, it is one of approximately 30 such sculptures discovered, each offering a glimpse into the spiritual or ritualistic practices of the time.
Many of these figurines share a peculiar characteristic—their heads are often found snapped off. This intriguing detail raises questions about their purpose and the significance of their deliberate decapitation. Were these acts part of a ritual, symbolizing transformation or release? Or do they reflect a deeper cultural belief tied to the heavens and divine forces?
Their elaborate, high hairstyles serve as revealing glimpses into the personal fashion of their era, shedding light on the cultural trends and expressions of individuality that defined their time.
During the Bronze Age, Anatolia was a thriving center of innovation and cultural exchange. This period saw the widespread use of bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, which revolutionized tools, weapons, and art. The development of metallurgy led to specialized craftsmanship, and trade networks flourished, connecting Anatolia with regions as far as Mesopotamia and the Aegean. Settlements grew into organized communities, and the artistic achievements of the time, such as the Stargazer, reflect the sophistication and creativity of Bronze Age societies. These advancements laid the groundwork for the complex civilizations that would follow.

Resting in Serenity: The Weary Pilgrim of León
Nestled in Plaza San Marcos, León, along the historic Camino de Santiago Pilgrim route in northern Spain, the bronze statue of the Weary Pilgrim stands as a beacon of tranquility and reflection. This iconic statue serves as a serene refuge for modern-day spiritual travelers.
Situated in the heart of León, a significant town along the Camino de Santiago—a UNESCO World Heritage site—this statue plays a crucial role in the journey of countless pilgrims. The town of León, with its rich history and vibrant culture, offers pilgrims a moment of respite, allowing them to soak in its heritage and gather strength for the road ahead.
The Weary Pilgrim statue invites travelers to pause, relax, and contemplate their journey. It’s a place to reflect on the miles traveled, the challenges overcome, and the progress made. This statue symbolizes the importance of rest and reflection, essential elements for the soul's renewal along the pilgrimage.
In selecting the Weary Pilgrim statue, I was drawn to the peace and tranquility it embodies. This statue is more than just a resting place; its features speak profoundly of compassion, serenity, and the acknowledgment that we are all on our own spiritual journeys, in one way or another.
Creating this piece was a challenge that I embraced wholeheartedly. With every dot, my thoughts wandered to the countless weary pilgrims who had found solace there and continue to do so on their spiritual journey to Santiago de Compostela. Each mark on my paper was imbued with the stories of those travelers, their hardships, and their moments of reflection and renewal.
The statue's serene expression and gentle posture are a testament to the compassion and peace it offers to all who encounter it. As I worked, I aimed to capture not just its physical presence but the deep emotional resonance it holds for so many. This artwork is my way of honoring the pilgrims and their journeys, and of sharing the quiet strength and tranquility that the statue radiates.

Eastern Han Terracotta Horse
The Terracotta Horse from the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 BC–220 AD) is a striking example of ancient Chinese artistry and craftsmanship. Created during a period of cultural and economic flourishing, this sculpture reflects the significance of horses in Han society. Horses were not only vital for transportation and agriculture but also symbolized power, prestige, and military strength.
The detailed craftsmanship of the Terracotta Horse raises intriguing questions: was this a representation of a specific horse, or an idealized depiction of the prized Ferghana horses imported during the Han Dynasty? While we may never know the exact answer, the mystery only deepens our appreciation for this remarkable artifact and the culture that created it.
The Eastern Han Dynasty also saw the flourishing of the Silk Road, a vast network of trade routes that connected China to the Middle East, Europe, and beyond. Established during the Han Dynasty, the Silk Road facilitated the exchange of goods, ideas, and cultures, making it a cornerstone of global interaction. Precious commodities like silk, spices, and ceramics traveled along these routes, while knowledge, religion, and art flowed freely between civilizations. The Silk Road not only enriched the economies of the regions it touched but also fostered a legacy of cultural exchange that continues to inspire the modern world.

Anubis: Guardian of the Afterlife
Anubis, also known as Anpu or Inpu, was a significant deity in ancient Egyptian mythology. As the jackal-headed god of mummification and the afterlife, Anubis held several crucial roles:
- Embalmer: Anubis was closely associated with the process of mummification, overseeing the embalming of the dead to ensure they were prepared for their journey to the afterlife. Priests often wore Anubis masks during mummification rituals to invoke his presence and protection.
- Protector of the Tombs: Anubis safeguarded the tombs of the deceased from grave robbers and desecration. He was believed to protect the bodies and souls of the dead, ensuring they rested undisturbed.
- Guide of the Souls: As a guide through the underworld, Anubis led souls to the Hall of Ma'at, where they would face judgment. His guidance was essential in navigating the perilous journey through the afterlife.
- Weigher of the Heart: In the Hall of Ma'at, Anubis played a vital role in the weighing of the heart ceremony. The deceased's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, representing truth and justice. If the heart was lighter or equal in weight, the soul was deemed worthy of entering the afterlife. If heavier, it was devoured by the monstrous Ammit.
Anubis' representation as a jackal or jackal-headed figure symbolized his connection to cemeteries and tombs, as jackals were commonly seen in these areas. He remains one of the most iconic and enduring figures of ancient Egyptian mythology.
