Having a love of heavy horses, I wanted to capture the character of these majestic animals in oils. I am inspired by the work of Harold Septimus Power, an Official War Artist during WWI. Heavy horses were often the subject of his work, and I first viewed his work ‘Beaching the Lifeboat’ at the heritage Art Gallery of Ballarat. Power’s ability to capture the strength and beauty of heavy horses have left an indelible mark on my aspirations as an artist. I used light, shadow, and form to emphasise the horses’ strong physique and to portray their purpose as working horses. I wanted to capture the look in their eyes and the flick of their ears that show their gentle and willing nature. In this way, evoking a sense of sentimentality in the viewer for this not-so-often seen sight.
