These charming work horses were found in New Zealand's Southern Alps. In the most remote high country, dominated by high snow-capped mountains and broad flat valleys, the Erewhon Clydesdale Station are major breeders of Clydesdale horses. This beautiful bunch of flowers captured my imagination so much, I painted it three times. But flowers move and change, even when cut. Petals and leaves drop, some stems stand more upright, buds reach out and open up. The composition and directional forces totally changed from the initial bunch. The arrangement had taken on a more elegant, formal appearance but those wonderful linear patterns were still there in the petals and leaves.

This painting was done while I was holidaying in a B&B set in dense and varied bushland. The grass trees sparkled in the morning sun and my challenge was to capture the essential light, moisture and forms without fussing over too many details.

A practice when feed is scarce, the drovers would take their cattle along the grass-lined roadways – the long paddock - to take advantage of the extra feed. Nitmiluk Gorge is a dreamland of towering sandstone cliffs and deep-water vistas that have carved the landscape over millions of years. Using oils, I aimed to highlight the vibrant colours and texture of this breathtaking landscape. The foreground is in shadow, while early morning light reveals the colourful sandstone cliffs that flank the gorge. This creates a distinct change in colour hues of the Gorge, as reflected and direct light play over the landscape during the daylight hours. Importantly, Nitmiluk is awe-inspiring to all who visit it and is pivotal to the ancient Dreamtime stories of the Indigenous Jawoyn people.Dimensions: 90cm x 45cm

Having a love of heavy horses, I wanted to capture the character of these majestic animals in oils. I am inspired by the work of Harold Septimus Power, an Official War Artist during WWI. Heavy horses were often the subject of his work, and I first viewed his work ‘Beaching the Lifeboat’ at the heritage Art Gallery of Ballarat. Power’s ability to capture the strength and beauty of heavy horses have left an indelible mark on my aspirations as an artist. I used light, shadow, and form to emphasise the horses’ strong physique and to portray their purpose as working horses. I wanted to capture the look in their eyes and the flick of their ears that show their gentle and willing nature. In this way, evoking a sense of sentimentality in the viewer for this not-so-often seen sight.Dimensions: 90cm x 45cm
