    The old Denison House in Pt Denison/Dongara inspired me to embark on an "Images of Dongara" series.  I fell in love with the front door, having so much character and beauty in the weathered wood.  I felt the history oozing out through the peeling layers of paint.

    The site was originally occupied by a flour mill in 1865.  Some years later stones from the mill were used to build Denison House, a delightful building on the banks of the Irwin River.  In 1944 the Benedictine Order from New Norcia purchased the building for use as a summer retreat.  Now owned by the Irwin Shire it is used by various communnity groups as well as artists.

    Built approx 1912, this lovely building began life as the Carlton Tearooms.  It has had a checkered career over the years, having been a tearooms, cabaret hall, billiard hall, sly grog shop and various restaurants.  After being emply for a few years it has been recently renovated and reopened as a popular restaurant.

    The twin towns of Dongara/Pt Denison in Western Australia contain some delightful historical buildings from a bygone era.  Some, such as this one are still being used today.  Originally built as the Roads Board building, it is currently the very popular Poppies Cafe.

    This view of corridors at the Colosseum in Rome brings up many emotions in me.  Sadness at the fate that so many people and animals faced, awe at the skills of the architects and builders involved, amazement that this was considered entertainment.  To me the light and the shadows seem to reflect the different perspectives of those present in ancient times.  Some going to their death, some to glory and fame, some to be entertained.  And I wonder at the lives of all the people who have trodden those paths over the milleniums.

Artist bio

I believe my interest and love of art goes back to my childhood although I have only come to realize that as an adult.  None of my art from primary or secondary school has survived, but I remember being asked in Grade 2 and Grade 4 to draw special art pieces for Parent night displays.  Undoubtedly my favourite subject at school was art but unfortunately I was not in a position to extend that interest at the time.

During my teens I designed and sewed most of my clothes and went on to sew for my two children as well.  After entering the workforce, marriage and while being a Mum, I sought out hobbies and short courses in soft furnishings, cake decorating, pottery, photography, wood turning, garden design, sketching and bonsai.  Looking back I can see that creativity had featured strongly in my life.

After dabbling in acrylics with Folk Art for a few years, I took a break for a while.  Visiting one of the Armadale Society of Artists’ pop-up shops in Armadale and later chancing upon one of the Annual Exhibitions, re-kindled my interest and I eventually commenced attending watercolour classes at the Art House on Hobbs in 2019.  

My travels in recent years around our beautiful state has certainly inspired me.  I am in love with the colours, textures and patterns that nature provides us with and try to incorporate this in my art.  I am thoroughly enjoying this stage of my life in sharing my art with others.
