Irene Young - Artist Bio

Australian Wildlife Artist

My professional painting career did not start until my family and I moved from Sydney to Perth, Western Australia, and settled in the suburb of Roleystone in Perth’s southern hills. Although a trained graphic designer working in printing and publishing for a number of years, I had painted only for my own enjoyment, but the natural beauty of the bush settings of Roleystone, inspired me to paint further. In my artwork, I endeavour to explore the themes of the natural environment, the birds, the animals, the flowers and the landscapes of my local area, to bring to the viewer an appreciation of the natural beauty and wonder which is all around them in the amazing Australian bushland, and to influence them to value what is uniquely ours.

I first started painting in watercolour, but have now progressed into acrylics and mixed media. My future desire is to further my art career by experimenting and pushing the boundaries of creative endeavour in ideas, techniques and mediums, developing a style that is uniquely mine, portraying the Australian landscape and everything it contains, so that I can exhibit my work for the viewer to appreciate.

My first successful solo exhibition was at ‘Geneses in the Hills’ and I was one of three featured artists at ‘The York Mill Gallery’. In November 2013, I exhibited my work in a joint venture with three other artists and a sculptor at the Zig Zag Gallery in Kalamunda on the theme of nature titled ‘Four in Diversity’, and another exhibition there in 2017 called ‘Colours of Life’. I have also been a finalist in the 2014 Minnawarra Art Awards in Armadale and in 2016, I won first prize for Acrylics at the Alfred Cove Artists Awards. I was also an inaugural member of the Armadale Hills Open Studio Arts Trail and the ‘So Unexpected’ Art Exhibition in 2015.

As an artist, your surroundings are your inspiration. Living in the beautiful bush setting of Roleystone within the Armadale Hills for the past 30 years, my artwork reflects my appreciation of the natural beauty and wonder of the native wildlife. My aim is to share this appreciation and to highlight to my audience what is uniquely ours. Wrens, Black Cockatoos, Magpies and Kookaburras have become some of my favourite wildlife to capture on canvas. Originally painting in watercolours, I have now diverged into acrylics and mixed media, experimenting with a variety of mediums which allow me to express myself in different ways. If you share a passion for our wildlife and would like to see some of my work, I would love to invite you to my studio. You are welcome to contact me if you wish to buy any of my paintings or would like to visit my art studio "Stonegate Art Studio" in Roleystone within the beautiful hills of Perth, Western Australia.
